Maestro William Matheny, 2009

This multi-talented gentleman, exceptionally gifted artist and friend has labored tirelessly over the last twelve years or so, trying to teach me to draw and paint. He accepted this daunting challenge when, on the day we were introduced, I sheepishly inquired if he would be willing to take me on as a student.
During our weekly sessions he was always encouraging, gentle and kind. Much like the parable of teaching a man to fish versus giving him a fish, the Maestro taught me how to paint rather than satisfy my desire for recipes, quick fixes and the key to producing instant masterpieces. His lessons were calculated to develop my ability to see as an artist, to understand that failure is part of growth, to "just let go" of a troublesome painting and start out fresh, to know the importance of value and that color is personal.
We have remained close friends though a couple of thousand miles now separate us. He is always there for me whenever I stumble, am hopelessly blocked or need a serious critique. For my successes, as well as, my failures, he is there to offer a kind word, a pat on the back or sound advice.
Without the Maestro, I'd still be drawing stick figures or perhaps would have given up. And though I may never amount to much as an artist, I hope, at least to make him proud of my effort.

Mr. Charlie Wilson, 2009

We were lucky to meet Charlie when we lived in the same apartment building. He's in his nineties now, devoting each day to collecting, repairing as necessary and distributing all manner of items donated by citizens of Portland to those in need. He's a Humanitarian and a gentleman who has enriched the lives of thousands and truly makes a difference every day.
